A Brief History of The Tides by the Sea

Dive into the rich history of The Tides by the Sea and discover our storied past. From our inception in the early 20th century to our evolution into a premier oceanfront condominium resort, our history is as captivating as the relaxing Seaside shores we call home.

An "Apartment Hotel"

In 1926, The Tides started out as an “apartment hotel” built by then Portland Mayor, George L. Baker and owned by the Seaside Snug Harbor Company. In 1940, eight studios were added on above the office and in 1963, our two-story oceanfront building was constructed adding 26 more apartments to the rental operation, bringing the total to 51. In 1973, the apartments were sold and are now individually owned with many owners choosing to participate in our rental operation. Although the diving board is long gone, our heated swimming pool is opened seasonally for you to enjoy.

An Iconic Location

The Tides is surrounded on the West by the majestic Pacific Ocean and to the South by the Tillamook Head with the Tillamook “Terrible Tilly” Lighthouse (constructed in 1881) right offshore. The Seaside Golf Course (completed in 1929) is just a walk away to the East. Take a walk (or a jog) North on The Prom (completed in 1921) to explore downtown Seaside and then return to our historic “Quiet End of the Prom” for a much-needed rest.

The Tides Today

Today many of our units are still owned by descendants of their original owners. Make sure your stay is complete with a photo op at our iconic frog, who has graced our property since 1926. Many family photos have been taken year after year because they have been coming to The Tides for generations! Our owners invite you to make The Tides your family’s place-to-stay for generations to come.
